FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

The official FAQ for WDLXTV can be found here: http://forum.wdlxtv.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2803

Q: Why doesn't WDLXTV for Live Plus support 3TB HDDs (or GPT partition tables)? The drives work just fine on the official firmware!

A: The Plus Firmware that comes from WD is signed with WD's private keys. The signature checking is done in the official signed & encrypted kernel. If we were to use the official kernel, it would refuse to load a non-signed firmware (like WDLXTV). So, the WDLXTV-Plus uses and older kernel for Plus from before the signature checking was enforced. This allows the firmware to load, but doesn't have new features - like GPT partition support. WD's GPL kernel for Plus is older still than the kernel being used now, and doesn't support GPT as well. The solution would be for WD to release an updated version of their GPL kernel with the signature checking disabled - but that is unlikely to ever happen...

Q: Why does WDLXTV for Live support 3TB HDDs?

A: Because we are using the official kernel supplied from WD. The kernel for Live does not have firmware signature checking and can be used to boot homebrew firmwares.
